Community Health Promotion Program
The Community Health Promotion Program (CHPP) works with local and State programs to help communities increase their ability to conduct community-based health promotion for all populations and settings. We link community development to health and quality of life outcomes, with emphasis on multi-sector collaboration, and civic engagement that is fair, transparent, and inclusive. Our focus is on:
- comprehensive health planning and improvement processes
- community-school chronic disease prevention
- crosscutting health promotion and social determinants and disparities in population health
CHPP has worked directly with over 40 local health initiatives across Maine and with numerous state programs, and is a core partner in the Healthy Maine Partnerships.
CHPP is funded entirely through the Federal Preventive Health Block Grant dollars received by the Bureau of Health. CHPP objectives are guided by Healthy Maine 2010 and Public Health Essential Services #4, 5, 7, 8 as described in the National Public Health System Assessment Tool.
CHPP coordinates with other State programs that have shared objectives, such as the Office of Substance Abuse and Department of Education. We work with “non-health” sectors whose objectives also influence health. We network with other types of community-building movements (e.g., smart growth; positive youth development; neighborhood building).
CHPP provides training, planning grants/minigrants/funding news, technical assistance and resources, and conference scholarships and support. CHPP also provided support for the early start-up and sponsorship for conferences of the Maine Network of Healthy Communities, an independent statewide organization of local community health initiatives.
